Crash into my wall, lose your car

Kimberley - The owner of a house in Hadison Park took possession of a vehicle which crashed into his fence on Friday night, refusing to allow the car to be towed away before he had been paid for the damage to his property.
The accident happened on Friday night and by Saturday several curious residents had gone to see the vehicle, which was perched precariously on the brick structure of the fence.
By Sunday morning, all four tyres had been stolen from the vehicle.
The owner of the house in Meyer Street, Michael Calitz, said that this was the second time someone had crashed into his wall.
“Once they remove the vehicle, they will never come back to pay for the damages they caused.”
Calitz said he was sitting in his lounge on Friday night around 8pm when he heard tyres screeching and then a loud bang.
He added that the car must have been speeding, considering the impact.
“Bottles of alcohol were also found in the car.”
Calitz added that after the incident, the driver got out of the car and tried to flee the scene but was stopped by his friends who were driving behind him.
“The car is going nowhere until the owner pays me R15 000 for the wall because I refuse to claim on my home insurance because it will mean an increase in my premiums. I will also be classified as high risk.”
He pointed out that the driver of the vehicle was not the owner and he allegedly did not have a driver’s licence.
“The owner of the car stated that he does not have car insurance because it lapsed a few months ago after he failed to pay his monthly premiums.
“The only surety I have is the car. Once he has paid for my damages, he can come and tow the car away.”
Police spokesman, Lieutenant Donald Mdhluli, said on Sunday that a case of reckless and negligent driving had been opened.
